Monash University is committed to improving the user experience and ensuring that our website is accessible to all users. Our website and web templates aim to meet Level AA success criteria of W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0.

About this website

A number of accessible design elements have been added to this web site.

Navigation

The global navigation bar provides access to the site’s major content areas. To assist people using screen readers, no images are used to create navigation bars.

The site supports keyboard-only access so that it is not necessary to use a mouse. Sections can be accessed by sequentially tabbing through the page elements.

At the top of the page, a ‘Skip to the content’ link provides ready access to page content bypassing the site navigation and banner areas.

Text

Users can resize the text in the web pages. If you have cookies enabled, these settings will be remembered each time you visit.

Images

We use blank alt attributes where images are used only for decorative or layout purposes. Text equivalents have been provided where images contain descriptive content.

Cascading Style Sheets

Cascading Style Sheets have been implemented in a manner that will allow users to turn off or override our styles and still be able to read the page content.

Relative sizes have been used for fonts and most other attributes. Padding and margins around some elements are given absolute values.

Heading elements

All pages on this site use structured semantic mark-up. Headings and sub-headings use the header elements <h1>, <h2>, <h3> etc. Important items have been highlighted with the use of <strong> or <em>, and lists have been marked up using <ul> and <li>.

Assistive technologies (for students and staff)

Assistive technology, such as screen reading and magnification software, is available for use on Monash University computers and at our purpose-built adaptive technology rooms.

If you have any queries about assistive software at Monash University contact Disability Support Services.
