Idealist Fathers, Broken Dreams

Sandra Goldbloom Zurbo (My Father’s Shadow) and Boris Frankel (No Country for Idealists) have a conversation with author Jeff Sparrow about their parents’ crumbled dreams of an idealised communist world, the complex relationship each had with their parents in Australia and Russia, and the authors’ processes of telling that story.

Sandra Goldbloom Zurbo has been published in Griffith Review and Westerly. Her novel, The Book of Rachel, was published by Allen&Unwin. Sandra established Dead Set, the first DTP company to work specifically with publishers. For forty years she also edited for academic publishers. Sandra cooks, writes, and gardens in Castlemaine.

Boris Frankel was born in Melbourne and for over fifty years has been a social and environmental theorist, political economist, and media commentator. Apart from publications in Australia, the UK and America, his work has been translated into many languages in Europe, Asia and Latin America.

Jeff Sparrow is a writer, editor and academic. His recent books include No Way But This: In Search of Paul Robeson, Crimes Against Nature: Capitalism and Global Heating and the forthcoming Twelve Rules for Strife (with Sam Wallman). He works at the Centre for Advancing Journalism at the University of Melbourne.
