Race Mathews was Chief of Staff to Gough Whitlam, a Federal MP, Victorian MP and Minister, Local Government Councillor, academic, speech therapist, and primary teacher. He held numerous positions within the Australian Labor Party, as well as in the co-operative and credit union movements, and wrote and spoke widely about their history, values, and activities. A major focus of his research was the worker-owned co-operatives at Mondragon in the Basque region of Spain, and their foundations in the social teachings of the Catholic Church. He was married to writer Iola Mathews and lived in Melbourne.
